Meara denied Irish call-up

The New York Red Bulls have denied Ireland's U-21 call-up of goalkeeper Ryan Meara. The 21 year old was invited to join the squad for their camp this month, which includes a friendly verses Denmark and European Championship qualifier against Italy.

Meara acknowledged the call-up saying "I got called in for the U-21s, but the Red Bulls would rather me stay here and focus on continuing to win games here," he continued "My main focus is here as well. We have a great team and I think the goal is the MLS Cup, so that's all I'm focusing on." Meara further added "Any player wants to push themselves and see how far they can go," Ireland sought out Meara because of his eligiblity due to his grandparent heritage. "It's an honor to be considered for Ireland, but like I said, right now, I am focused on what's going on here with the Red Bulls." He stated "Every player wants to play international soccer," and finished saying "But for me, I'll cross that bridge when that comes."

Meara is also eligible to represent the United States, being born in Yonkers, New York.
